What Does a School Trustee Do?

School Trustees are locally elected members of the School District’s Board of Education. They represent the public interest in education and serve as advocates for students, families, and the broader community within the school district.

Trustees are required to carry out their responsibilities in a manner that supports the Board in fulfilling its duties under the School Act. Collectively, the Board sets the strategic direction for the district and ensures accountability to the public.

Key responsibilities of a School Trustee include:

  • Focusing on student achievement and well-being
  • Setting district policies and priorities
  • Approving the district’s budget and financial plans
  • Participating in Board decision-making that benefits the entire district
  • Representing and communicating the interests and perspectives of their local community

Trustees act in the best interests of all students and the district as a whole,

rather than advocating for individual schools or issues.
